Grand Traverse Co. Democrats Anxiously Await 1st Congressional District Results

Lon Johnson is trying to stop the Republican control of the 1st Congressional District.

It has been that way since 2011 when Dan Benishek was voted in.

9&10’s Caroline Powers is with Lon Johnson with the latest on his feeling as polls across the state are now closed.

The anticipation is growing in Traverse City.

The top of the Park Place Hotel is packed with local democratic supporters.

People have had their eyes on the TV all night anxiously awaiting race results.

A big race everyone is following, Michigan 1st Congressional District.

We caught up with Lon Johnson earlier Tuesday.

He was using every last minute to meet and greet voters.

He is expected to stop in Traverse City at some point Tuesday night.

People here say it’s great to come together and cheer on our local candidates who have worked so hard over the last year.

“Very few Congressional seats are open, this is one of them,” says John Snow, Chair of Grand Traverse County Democratic party. “This is a race that could go either way but Lon has worked very very hard and I think we’re going to take it. He’s put in an enormous amount of work, very dedicated volunteers and this is one that is in play.”

Northern Michigan’s News Leader will stay at the Park Place Hotel as we await the results of Tuesday night’s election and get reaction from Lon Johnson.
