Year-Long Fundraiser Pays for New Benzie Central Track

A year of fundraising is paying off for the Benzie Central community.

Benzie Central Middle School and High School has a new track.

The first one was built about 20 years ago and was in complete disrepair and neglected.

The track coach says it was barely safe to practice on.

The school could not afford a new track, so parents, alumni and athletes raised about $150,000 for a new one.

“We haven’t been able to compete,” said Asa Kelly, the Benzie Central track coach. “Middle school gym classes, high school gym classes are using this all day, every day. So it’s a track that’s used not only by the kids, but the community too.”

They’re hoping to have it in for regionals this year, and will host a couple of meets for middle and high schoolers.
