Mackinac Island Celebrates Signature Sweet Treat with Fudge Festival

Walking down main street and visitors can’t help but notice sweet smell of fudge on Mackinac Island.

This weekend is the time to celebrate the 130 year old tradition.

Visitors on the island will be able to enjoy special events all weekend from tastings to sugar sack racing and even a chance to win a free trip to the island.

9 & 10’s Blayke Roznowski and photojournalist Noah Jurik take us to the island with a look at the fun weekend ahead.

"This weekend we celebrate what the island is all about and that’s fudge," Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau executive director Tim Hygh said.

Mackinac Island is special for a few reasons: the laid back lifestyle, the horses, and of course the one of a kind fudge.

The Fudge Festival starts Friday night with thousands of people coming out to celebrate the sweet treat.

"More than anything, I think it helps us keep people aware that there are different types of fudge, but there’s only one Mackinac Island Fudge and if you do it the right way, the Mackinac Island way, it’s a really a difference between other fudges," Hygh said.

Visitors on the island will get to check out special fudge making presentations all weekend where they get to see exactly how the sweet treat gets made.

"They get excited and we give them a free sample off the table if they want one that’s nice and warm and the kids especially like that," Murdick’s Fudge general manager Ron Steensma said.

Visitors say they can’t wait to enjoy the delicious weekend ahead.

"I was very excited," visitor Meghan Brogan said. "This is my first time on Mackinac Island, so even better that there’s going to be lots of fudge this weekend."
