What’s Happening in Northern Michigan: Bluegrass Concerts, Great Lakes Education, Shay Days

Sip along to songs, set sail on the Great Lakes or head to someone’s 177th birthday party.

in Lake Leelanau has two free bluegrass concerts coming up this summer at their picturesque vineyards.

On July 27, "Oh Brother, Big Sister" will be performing, followed by "The Accidentals" on August 17.

Both performances run from 7pm till 9pm, and you’re encouraged to bring your own lawn chair or blanket to sit on the lawn and enjoy a great evening of wine and free music.

This summer is a great opportunity to learn more about our lakes with a aboard the Inland Seas’ schooner.

You’ll work with the Inland Seas Education Association to help trawl for fish, collect plankton and sample the lake bottom to take a look at all parts of the lake.

They also offer an Astronomy Under Sail program, where you’ll experience the brilliance of the stars in the Northern Michigan dark sky, and learn about galaxies, stars, observational astronomy and history.

They’re offering a special breakfast sail on July 29, and will be offering sails out of Traverse City that weekend during the film festival, as well.

Join the to celebrate the life and work of Ephraim Shay during Shay Days!

This family-friendly, two-day event will take place Friday and Saturday, July 15 and 16.

Shay Days events will run at Shay Park, the Shay Hexagon House and the Harbor Springs History Museum. Activities include live steam model trains, an electric train, games, historical photograph displays and self-guided tours at the Shay Hexagon House, and crafts, games and more.

As Shay Days is held around Shay’s birthday, it wouldn’t be a true celebration without cake and singing.

Head to the Hexagon House on Saturday at 1pm for birthday cake and wish Ephraim Shay a happy 177th birthday.
