SAFE PIPES Acts On Its Way To President Obama’s Desk
The SAFE PIPES Act is headed to President Obama’s desk to be signed into law.
The goal is to protect some of our most precious natural resources.
The law will designate the Great Lakes as a high consequence area, which subjects pipelines in the region to tougher safety standards.
It also improves oil spill response plans to address ice cover, and requires critical reviews of pipeline age and integrity.
Senator Gary Peters helped introduce the measure.
We spoke with him Tuesday afternoon.
“Certainly after the catastrophic accident in Kalamazoo, we need to make sure we are putting every safeguard in place. I’m particularly concerned about Line 5 crossing the Straits of Mackinac. We’ve got to make sure they are subject to the most stringent standards,” said Senator Peters.
