Judge Rules on Torch Lake Sandbar Party Lawsuit

People who live on Torch Lake are hoping for a quieter summer after a judge ruled against downstate party promoters.

Tuesday the Torch Lake Protection Alliance won a lawsuit against three companies involved in the Sandbar Party Bash last year.

People have been partying on Torch Lake for years, but homeowners say last year got out of hand.

Tuesday, a judge decided BeatBox Beverages cannot promote, sponsor, organize or hold a sandbar party for the next five years and d-j fade and Lansing Party are banned forever.

The court also declared that the 2015 Fourth of July weekend sandbar bash violated several water and environmental acts, as well as a zoning ordinance.

Homeowners are ecstatic to hear to that this is hopefully the end of the big parties on Torch Lake.

Jack Graham lives on the lake and says, “I have absolutely no problem with people coming up here and enjoying themselves as long as they behave responsibly.”

This party last year attracted thousands prompting the Torch Lake Protection Alliance to sue BeatBox Beverages, DJ Fade and Lansingparty.com.

Lawyer representing TLPA, Karen Ferguson says, “The unfortunate thing about last year was these three defendants promoted it on social media where you put out an invitation and you have no idea how many thousands of people are going to show up.”

Lansingparty.com says they have nothing to do with it.

Owner Chris Staggs says, “My company has nothing to do with promoting or being party of any particular party on Torch Lake, I was there personally on my personal boat for the Fourth of July.”

The denial continued when asked for reaction to the lawsuit, “It doesn’t change anything for my company which has never or doesn’t have any plans to try in attempt to promote any parties in Torch Lake, it’s not our area to work in,” says Staggs.

Homeowners like Kim Weir-Snyder say they hope this sends a message. “I think we’ll still have parties out there I think that’s fine it would be nice to have boats without loud speakers playing all night long.”
