State Senator Schmidt Addresses Issues in Northern Michigan

State Senator Wayne Schmidt addressed issues plaguing Northern Michigan over coffee Monday.

And a popular question was the recent decision to close Pugsley Correctional Facility in Grand Traverse County.

Schmidt says he was surprised to hear the prison was closing, and that he didn’t have anything to do with the decision to shut it down.

He says he needs the support of the governor and other Senators to keep it open.

Another point of tension: the state budget.

Schmidt says he’s not happy with the recent state budget when it comes to money in Northern Michigan.

“We’ve had less than six days to work on our case,” Schmidt stated. “We’re voting on budgets this week. I plan to vote ‘no’ on that budget because I don’t see the savings verses what we spend down state. Again, Northern Michigan is impacted.”

Schmidt says sending letters of support to his office and the governor’s office is the best way to keep Pugsley open.
