Isabella County Deputies Still Searching for Armed Robber
"They woke up to a male tapping on the window with what appeared to me a semi automatic black handgun."
The search is on for the robber who held up two men at gunpoint.
Tonight Isabella County deputies need some help to find their man.
The armed robbery happened at the park and ride at the Pickard Road exit of U.S. 127 around 5 a.m. Sunday morning.
The man then ran away.
The robber had a 30 minute head start on investigators because he stole the victims cell phones.
They weren’t hurt but it’s a case that has people questioning how safe park and rides are.
"Typically a park and ride is a little darker so it’s an easy target," says Isabella County Sheriff Michael Main.
Troy Jones uses the lot several times a week.
"I was surprised because it’s usually really quiet here and I’ve never seen any bad elements here so I was really shocked," says Jones.
The victims tried going to the sheriff’s office but no one was there, so they called 9-1-1 from a nearby Speedway.
It gave the robber a head start on a K-9 team.
"The detective did speak to them about why didn’t [they] stop at a gas station prior to that and call 9-1-1 and they said ‘We were going to the sheriff’s office we thought this would be the right place’," says Sheriff Main.
The sheriff says none of the businesses in the area have cameras that point in the direction they think the man went.
So for now they’re asking people to be extra alert while they continue their search.
"I’m not usually afraid like that I don’t usually fall asleep here so it’s one of them things I’m pretty much on guard," says Jones.
"I really do believe that maybe they should have surveillance now at every stop even rest stops. The day and age that we live in we have to be really careful," says Rochelle Kelsch-Groendal.
The man deputies are looking for is described as a black man in his 20’s.
He has a mustache and is about 5’10”.
If you have any information you’re urged to call the Isabella County Sheriff’s Department.
