Traverse City Police, Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Dept Celebrate National Police Week

This week is National Police Week and departments here in Northern Michigan, and across the country are honoring all who have, and continue to serve.

Tuesday, the Traverse City Police Department and Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office held a memorial service for fallen law enforcement.

That includes Traverse City Sgt. Dennis W. Finch who was killed in the line of duty in 1998.

Both departments welcomed other first responders, family and friends to honor law enforcement.

The day also brought out retired officers who say this week holds a lot of importance.

“I don’t believe police work is a job. It’s a way of life. Your whole family can circle around police work,” says retired TCPD officer, David Leach. “I meet people that have come on, new people, and always shake hands with old fellowships that I’ve known for a long time. I just love it.”

The afternoon was complete with a 21-gun salute, hoisting of the flag and bagpipes.
