Obama Administration Sends Letter To Public Schools Encouraging Gender Equality

The Obama administration is telling public schools that they must allow transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms of their choice.

A letter by the Departments of Education and Justice will go out to school districts Friday.

Federal officials say the letter will not impose any legal requirements, but the guidelines are meant to clarify school districts’ obligations to ensure that students are not discriminated against.

Some are already speaking out against the recommendation.

North Carolina’s Governor Pat McCroy says “we believe a court rather than a federal agency should tell our state, what the law requires”

The White House guidance comes in the same week the Justice Department took legal action against North Carolina over it’s law limiting the use of public restrooms to the gender on a person’s birth certificate
