Mecosta County Event Aims To Remove Stigma of Mental Illness

Removing the stigma of mental illness. That was the goal of an event Wednesday in Mecosta County.

Wednesday, New Journey Clubhouse hosted the free event in Hemlock Park in Big Rapids.

The organization helps people with mental illness and developmental disabilities.

People participating in the annual event created encouraging signs.

This year, more than 50 people attended to show their support for the clubhouse.

Their goal is to erase any shame that comes with handling mental illnesses or disabilities.

“It helps people to understand that mental health is not just like some people used to think. They’re regular people like everybody else, but they just have some things they have to deal with,” says Kathy McGovern.

The New Journey Clubhouse works in conjunction with Mecosta County’s Community Mental Health Services.
