Hook & Hunting: Trout Outlook Positive for Fishing Season

The fishing season is looking bright in the Upper Peninsula, particularly for trout.

The Department of Natural Resources says they’re expecting great trout numbers in Lake Superior and Michigan.

Sault Ste. Marie bait shops explain that they are already starting to get busy for the fishing season.

Which is a complete change following last year’s brutal winter.

"We were probably close to two to three weeks behind in weather because it was such a cold spring, the fish didn’t migrate up river as much as they should have," Wild Bill’s Bait & Tackle and The Last Resort manager Ken Engebretsen said. "This year they’re ahead of schedule even, so that’s what really makes this interesting this year for fishing."

Bait shops are also hopeful for a great start to walleye season which begins on May 15.
