Ingham County Woman Sentenced To Prison For Death of Newborn Daughter

An update on the death of a newborn baby in Ingham County.

The infant’s mother will spend at least 27-and-a-half years in prison for the murder of her newborn daughter.

Melissa Mitin, of Okemos, learned her sentence Wednesday morning.

She pleaded guilty to second-degree murder last month.

Her baby was found in a wastebasket with the umbilical cord and placenta still attached in 2013.

Police were also investigating the 2014 disappearance of Mitin’s baby boy who is presumed dead.

As part of her plea, Mitin will not be charged in her son’s disappearance.
