Traverse City Officials Warn Property Owners About Lead Pipes

Nearly 130 Traverse City property owners will soon get warning letters about lead pipes.

State and federal officials prompted Traverse City officials to reach out and educate residents about lead and copper following the Flint water crisis.

Water testing is also planned as a precaution.

The city’s water treatment plant says Traverse City water is very stable and non-corrosive.

"We want to be on top of it and actually test this now and see what we get," says Art Krueger, Traverse City Water Treatment Plant superintendent. "Over the next four years we’re going to be taking care of replacing all these connections with a new copper line."

Krueger says they’ve budgeted $240,000 for the project over the next four years.

They plan to begin construction later this year.
