DNR: Bears Beginning to Emerge from Dens in Search of Food

The Department of Natural Resources says hungry bears are starting to emerge from their dens.

That means they’re looking for food, which tends to lure them toward residences to search through trash cans, grills and bird feeders.

One Grand Traverse County family found themselves in this situation.

The bear was found under the porch of the family’s house in Grawn.

Tuesday, the DNR tranquilized and moved the adult male bear to a new location Tuesday.

The agency says people should remove and store food sources until more natural food is available for the bears.

They also warn people to never try to feed or tame bears, as the animals need to retain their natural fear of humans.
