Traverse City Coast Guard Ends Search for Kayaker in Lake Michigan

A desperate search on Lake Michigan. U.S. Coast Guard’s Traverse City Air Station spent the day trying to find a missing kayaker.

The man went missing Wednesday afternoon when he and his brother flipped their kayaks.

It happened off the coast of Sheboygan in Wisconsin.

The brother managed to swim ashore, but not in good condition. He was sent to the hospital with extreme hypothermia.

Traverse City joined crews from Sheboygan and Milwaukee on a 12-hour search, but didn’t find a trace.

Lt./Command Pablo Smith says, “Our resources are designed to get there as soon as we can to recover a survivor out of the water. Usually during drownings it’ll take several days sometimes weeks and months before a body will surface to be recovered.”

The U.S. Coast Guard says no matter what time of year you’re out on the water remember to dress for the weather and always wear a life jacket.
