Forest Preserve Opens Near Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

A Northern Michigan forest preserve is now open for the public to enjoy.

The Palmer Woods Forest Preserve near Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Glen Arbor is now open for hiking, cross-country skiing and viewing wildlife.

The preserve is a hardwood forest of more than 700 acres and has a deep, glacial valley.

The property was purchased by Leelanau Conservancy for $4.1 million after a fundraising campaign.

The forest acts as a natural filter for water flowing underground by soaking up rainfall and keeping nutrients out of Glen Lake.

A 2-mile looped trail and a 2 1/4 –mile trail bisecting the park are ready, and more are in the works.
