Michigan Prepares for Tuesday’s Primary

The eve of the Michigan primary is here and presidential candidates are wrapping up their campaigning across the state Monday.

The candidates hope their last minute campaign stops will translate into more support when voters go to the polls.

Some voters will also have special elections in their area but the focus for a lot voters is the presidential primary.

"Abstaining from voting is the worst idea in the world if you’re a little bit angry with our political process," says co-founder of Northern Michigan for Bernie Sanders Sean Bielby.

As polling places get ready for voters in the morning, people are still advocating for the candidates. Bielby is offering rides to help guarantee people will vote.

"Whether it’s just because they need a ride or whether they need encouragement to do so. Just remind them that they might be a little disenfranchised with the political process and the only way that’s ever going to change is exercising your right to vote," says Bielby.

While some voters are independently campaigning for candidates elected officials say it’s also important to get the word out about certain candidates who would best fit their area.

"I represent the northern half of Michigan where it’s tough to find jobs ,it’s tough support your family and I wanna see more businesses locating in Northern Michigan," says Congressman Dr. Dan Benishek.

Congressman Benishek hosted a veterans assistance fair in Petoskey on Monday.

He says in addition to veterans needing to be a priority for the next president, job creation is vital.

"I think we need a republican president to move this economy forward and remove the regulations the feds have put out there to make it difficult for people to do business," says Dr. Benishek.

Regardless of who you want in the white house it’s important to cast your vote.

"It’s important for people to participate in the process because otherwise you’re going to be depending on somebody else picking your candidate," says Dr. Benishek.
