Mancelona Man Uses Dating Site to Commit Fraud, Police Looking for More Victims

Police say an Antrim County man used dating websites to steal from his victims.

Now, he faces fraud and larceny charges.

Troopers say James Hughes conned people and businesses out of thousands of dollars.

The man from Mancelona is now charged with the crimes in Cheboygan County.

Police say Hughes would meet people online, gain their trust and then scam them out of money.

In cheboygan, State Police say the crime involves him selling a car to someone promising repairs.

But the car wasn’t fixed when they picked it up.

Police say there could be more victims across Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.

"He eventually scammed this person out of money along with a number individuals and businesses in our local area," MSP St. Ignace Post Det./Sgt. Gary Demers said. "A lot of people don’t even know his real name, so they don’t know who to call. They don’t know what to do."

If you think you were a victim to these crimes, you are asked to call state police in St. Ignace.
