Hook and Hunting: Elk Survey

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources took the sky and ground earlier this week in Montmorency County for an important elk survey.

On Tuesday, the DNR collared 40 elk with GPS trackers with the goal of collecting and studying the habitats of elk, as well as their interactions between horseback riders and mountain bikers.

“This project is just another step in the process of the department trying to do a good job of managing the elk population,” said Dr. Dean Beyer, DNR Wildlife Research Biologist, “We’ve been doing research on elk going back to the 1960s, and so we just continue to investigate more and more things so we have better information to make better management decisions.”
