A Michigan state senator will resign as part of a plea deal connected to a shooting incident.

Senator Virgil Smith is accused of shooting his ex-wife’s car during a fight last May.

He pleaded guilty on Thursday.

As part of the deal, he could serve 10 months in jail for malicious destruction of property.

Assault and domestic violence charges were dismissed.

Smith will be sentenced in March.
