Kalkaska K-Stars Establishing Girls Hockey in Northern Michigan

KALKASKA – The Kalkaska K-Stars youth hockey program is continuing to grow the sport of girls hockey throughout northern Michigan.

Drawing players from Traverse City, Alpena, Petoskey, Kalkaska, Bay City and Mt. Pleasant, the K-Stars U-12 and U-14 programs are closing in on the end of their second season in Kalkaska after forming in Traverse City five years ago.

"A group of parents wanted a place for girls to play in their same age group and skill ability,” said assistant coach Chris Adams. “We started recruiting girls and slowly but surely we started growing the program."

Winners of the Michigan Girls Hockey League’s Tier II Granato Division, the U-12 program is ranked ninth nationally and second in the state.

This past weekend, the U-12 captured the Irish South Bend Cup in South Bend, Ind.

"It’s the best sport you could ever play, because it’s so fun,” said U-14 defenseman Josie Visser. “You meet so many people from all over Michigan, and all over different states, too.”
