Special Olympics Winter Games Continue in Northern Michigan

Thursday marked another busy day for athletes in this year’s Special Olympics Winter Games.

The day for many started at the Howe Arena in Traverse City for a few skating events including compulsory and freestyle events.

It also featured a performance from a Special Olympics group lead by the Unified Partner program.

The program takes teenage skaters and matches them with athletes to coach and train them for the games.

Those on the team say both the partners and competitors learn so much in the training process.

“It takes lots of practice, patience and dedication. Through all of the practices every athlete has improved so much for this entire year. And especially through the Unified Pairs programs and has like improved confidence a lot through all of the skaters.” Says Tori Weingarten, Area 15

Events continue Saturday morning with the snowshoeing and cross country finals and alpine skiing.
