2016 Special Olympics Winter Games Begin With Opening Ceremony in Acme
Celebrating four decades of dedicated athletes, the family and friends who support them and generous donors.
About 900 athletes from across the state are in Northern Michigan, giving it their all at the 2016 Special Olympics Winter Games.
Their motto is, “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt”.
From snowshoeing, to downhill skiing and figure skating, some bring with them decades of experience and a can-do attitude.
Michelle Dunaway takes us to the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa in Acme, where tonight’s opening ceremonies celebrate the athletes, and those who support them.
Approximately 900 athletes, 350 coaches/chaperones and 500 volunteers participate every year.
More than 900 athletes participated in the 2015 State Winter Games presented by Wertz Warriors, which was the highest athlete turnout for the Winter Games since 2007.
