St. Ignace looks to dethrone Muskegon Catholic Central

ST. IGNACE – St. Ignace will look to dethrone two-time defending Division 8 state champion Muskegon Catholic Central when the two programs meet Saturday in a state semifinal at Traverse City’s Thirlby Field.

The Saints (11-1) are making their first semifinal appearance since falling to Beal City in 2012, while the Crusaders (9-2) have appeared in four consecutive semifinals.

“They’re a really good team and they run hard,” St. Ignace senior Andrew Goldthorpe said. “It will be a tough team to play.”

A win Saturday will give St. Ignace its first bid to a state championship game since 1985 and second in school history, with the Saints winning the 1983 Class D state title.

Saturday’s contest marks the first meeting between the two programs.
