Jack’s Journal: Tuesday Toolmen

Some call it the “honey do list”, those fix it jobs around any home that need to be taken care of.  But not everyone is capable, or has the resources.  That’s where the Tuesday Toolmen come in handy!  Supporting United Way agencies, this group’s purpose is to help those who need it.

“Some people have had strokes, and the gentleman who use to do this all the time just can’t do it now.  You kind of feel for ‘em.  You get a nice feeling that you helped them with the job,” says toolman Al Swiderski.

These tool men volunteer’s payment is knowing you made someone’s home safer, just by doing something they enjoy doing.

“That’s the reason we do it.  It seems the people that are the most grateful are the ones with the easiest jobs we do,” says toolman Dave Coyne.

The group has had up to eight members at one time, now they are down to just three and they are looking for folks to join them to lend a hand. So if you are interested, contact the .

The jobs can range from a shower handrail to something more, like the porch that was supposed to be a repair that really needed to be a replace.  They then decided for safety, the steps to the garage should be taken care of, as well.

“Some of them, there have been a couple of them we went on and we were there for 9 to 10 hours. And we were like this is a bit more than we thought it was gonna be,” explains Al.

Lately, plumbing has been an issue the guys have been handling.

They take on just about anything.  They exist on a grant from Home Depot and monies from various requesting agencies.  Dave, a retired sign painter, and Al, a retired insurance agent.  But both guys do it for the challenge of making things right and knowing that they have helped someone.

“When you complete a job and you can see that you helped someone out, it makes your day,” says Al.
