Lake Erie Threatened by Oil-Based Leak from Shipwreck

Dive teams continue to search for the source of an oil-based leak in Lake Erie. It’s a search that could lead to a decades-old shipwreck.

The recently discovered barge sank in Lake Erie during the 1930s.

The barge is one of nearly 90 shipwrecks on a federal registry to identify serious pollution threats to American waters. Other sunken ships thought to be holding oil are scattered along the shorelines of Florida and Louisiana.

Experts say the shipwrecks are not "ticking time bombs," but it’s only a matter of time before oil starts leaking from the wreckage.
