Hook & Hunting: Decrease in Salmon Population

The Michigan DNR says there is a significant drop of Chinook Salmon in Lake Michigan this past year.

They say most weirs are down by 75-85 percent.

The DNR says the main issue in the loss of population resides with their food source.

The harsh winter is hurting Alewives, a fish Salmon often eat.

The d-n-r is now trying to find ways to address that problem.

“We recognize that they are an important game species, one of the most prized game species in the state so we made some efforts to balance predator and prey in the lake already.”

The DNR says with more average winters and summers, the Lake Michigan Alewife and Chinook population will recover.
