Marquette Co. Fights Big Box Tax Appeals

Leaders in the Upper Peninsula are trying to publicize the downside of tax appeals by big-box stores.

Right now, the country’s biggest retailers are trying to cut the cost of their property taxes and have successfully argued their properties are specifically built for their needs and in turn are worth much less than the cost of construction.

Local governments in Marquette County say they are having to issue refunds and put aside more money to deal with the tactic and essential services like libraries, school districts and fire departments are feeling the effects.
