President Obama Announces Plan to Leave 5,500 U.S. Troops in Afghanistan
President Obama changed his mind about bringing nearly all U.S. troops home from Afghanistan.
He says the combat may be over but our commitment to its people and their country is not.
The plan still reduces U.S. troops in Afghanistan from its current level of 10,000 to 5,500 troops, but the original plan was to leave only a thousand troops.
Military officials recommended the new plan to the president because of an increase in Taliban activity, including last month when a militant group overran a city for the first time since 2001.
President Obama defended his decision to make the change.
U.S. forces will continue to focus on counterterrorism threats and advise Afghan security forces as they fight the Taliban.
