Kinross Correctional Facility Closing

An Upper Peninsula prison is closing, as another re-opens.

By the end of the month, Kinross Correctional Facility will close down.

The Hiawatha Correctional Facility has been closed since 2009, but is re-opening after nearly 9 million dollars in upgrades.

The Corrections Department says upgrading security at Hiawatha was less expensive than making similar changes to Kinross.

By the end of the month, about 1,300 of the 1,600 inmates at Kinross will be transferred to Hiawatha, and the rest will be sent to the Chippewa Correctional Facility.

The Hiawatha Prison will take on the Kinross name once the move is complete.
