Lake Superior State University Students Participate in Mock Dorm Fire Exercise
Dozens of students witnessed just how fast a dorm room can turn deadly when a fire erupts.
Three fire departments teamed up with Lake Superior State University in a mock dorm fire training exercise.
It happened Wednesday afternoon on the LSSU campus in Sault Ste. Marie.
The training is part of Fire Prevention Week.
Crews stood by while the room went up in flames in a matter of minutes.
The room was realistic, with a TV, computer, bed and desk.
Three Lake State public safety students organized the drill.
“I hope the students feel that they need to take the proper precautions so that something like this doesn’t happen. I believe that most students are smart enough to know, but the smaller things like a mere candle laying on your desk could light the thing up in a matter of seconds,” said co-organizer of the event Stephen Butzin.
It took only six minutes for the fire to engulf the dorm room.
The deadly smoke filled it in less than two minutes.
