Houghton Lake Celebrates 85th Anniversary Reforestation Efforts

People gathered at the Roscommon State Park to remember their work to preserve forests like it now and in the past.

The Daughters of the American Revolution celebrated the 85th annual re-dedication of a statue commemorating the group’s reforestation efforts in Roscommon County.

The Louisa Saint Clair chapter helped plant 105 acres of white pine right off Old 27 Highway in Houghton Lake all those years ago.

“She wanted our chapter to reforest an area people from the Detroit area could go to visit and learn more about conservation, and our natural flora in Michigan,” said Chapter Regent Peggy King Scully.

They make the trip to Roscommon County every year to remember exactly what it took to preserve that land.
