Michigan Legislature Adding $4M to New State Budget for Preschool Funds

The state legislature will add more than $4 million to the new state budget.

The money will make sure school districts get the same amount of funding for preschool slots as this year.

Slots for the Great Lakes Readiness Program are based on the number of elementary students eligible for free lunch.

Districts with rising poverty increase funding for their slots this week, leaving more than 1,000 fewer slots for a dozen districts.

The Senate voted Tuesday to boost funding for those districts.

That includes a number of local districts.

Gratiot-Isabella, Eastern Upper Peninsula and the Charlevoix-Emmet districts will all get some of the money.
