Jerome Verrier suffers broken leg in training camp collision

TRAVERSE CITY – The Detroit Red Wings training camp opened with a scary moment Friday morning.

A collision between center Darren Helm and prospect Jerome Verrier during a drill led to Verrier being led off the ice on a stretcher, with the prospect suffering a broken leg.

“You don’t ever want to see that, especially in practice,” first-year coach Jeff Blashill said. “Unfortunately, we weren’t able to give heads up to either guy soon enough and obviously the drill got messed up a little bit. We’ve done that lots, we’ve done that drill lots and obviously never had that happen.”

Helm, who skated off the ice, will go through the NHL concussion protocol and is listed as day-to-day.

“Those collisions are the worst,” left winger Tomas Tatar said. “You are not looking and you hit each other, and that’s why I think it sounded really bad. It’s a fast game and those two guys didn’t see each other and hit.”

Camp resumes Saturday morning.
