Onekama has sights locked on Northwestern 6 title

ONEKAMA – Before it departs for the Northern Michigan Football League next season, the Onekama football team is eyeing a Northwestern Six conference title.

With eight starters returning on both sides of the ball, Onekama is looking to branch off last season’s success and make back-to-back postseason appearances for the first time since 2006 and 2007.

"Really, as a unit, I expect our line, both offensively and defensively to be the mainstay for us,” Onekama coach Jim Hunter said. “We had a 1,000-yard rusher in the backfield, and he’s back, and we’ll be new at quarterback, but we’ve got three athletes working at it right now. We’ll shake it out, and we’ll be in good shape."

When the Portagers do make the move to the NMFL, it will mark their third league in four years.

Onekama kicks off its season on Aug. 28, hosting Suttons Bay.
