Sault Ste. Marie seniors eye fourth straight winning season
SAULT STE. MARIE – Since becoming an independent in 2009, the Sault Ste. Marie football program has posted three winning seasons – all under the current senior class.
With 16 combined returners on both sides of the ball, the Blue Devils are looking to build off last season’s 5-4 record and get back into the postseason for the first time in two years.
"With Petoskey, Alpena and Marquette the first three games, that’s a bear of a schedule to start with, but I think we’ll be a little bit more prepared for that,” Sault Ste. Marie head coach Scott Menard said. “If we can get through that in decent shape, I think we’ve got a very good chance of getting back to the playoffs this year. The seniors especially really took it upon themselves to get themselves conditioned over the summer, we’re much stronger and faster. And I do notice a stronger bond with our guys this year, off the field, as well as on, and I think that’s going to pay some dividends especially early in the year."
Sault Ste. Marie opens its season on the road for the first two weeks, traveling to Petoskey and Alpena, respectively, before hosting Marquette on Sept. 11.
