Gaylord football moving in the right direction

GAYLORD – After winning a combined two games in the previous two seasons, the Gaylord football program took a step in the right direction last fall, posting its first winning record (5-4) since 2007.

After posting wins in each of their first four games, the Blue Devils dropped four of their final five games, including a 21-7 loss to Alpena in the final week of the regular season, which kept Gaylord out of the postseason.

That loss to Alpena has coach Will Cleaver and his seniors aspiring for more this fall.

"Whenever you have a couple years under your belt, then the guys understand the expectations and the level that we want them to play at and I think that's huge for any program,” Cleaver said. “I'm really excited about what that experience brings for us this year. I really think we can make a push to the playoffs and be pretty successful this year."

The Blue Devils open play on Aug. 28, hosting Cheboygan in non-conference action.
