Johannesburg-Lewiston relying on senior leadership in 2015

JOHANNESBURG – Johannesburg-Lewiston has become a postseason mainstay over the last six years, qualifying for the playoffs on five occasions since 2009.

With only 18 players on the varsity roster this fall, the Cardinals will rely on 10 seniors to keep the postseason streak alive.

"We have a lot of seniors this year, and I think as long as we all stick together and we all come along as one team, we'll do just fine this year,” said senior tight end Alden Nickert. “We have a lot of talent this year."

Along with senior and veteran quarterback Brandon Huff, Johannesburg-Lewiston enters 2015 with its entire starting backfield returning.

"They're physically ready this year, as compared to years past,” Johannesburg-Lewiston coach Joe Smokevitch said. “Condition has been great. It has been a little bit of weight room and crossfit kind of stuff and they've been working hard."

The Cardinals open their season on the road, traveling to Mancelona on Aug. 28, before opening their home schedule with Manton on Sept. 4.
