Nearly 300 Vermont Inmates Transfer From Kentucky To Lake County Prison

The plan to move almost 300 Vermont prisoners to Northern Michigan is now officially a go.

The GEO North Lake Correctional Facility is near Baldwin in Lake County.

Earlier this month, the governor approved the private prison to accept high-security inmates from other states.

The inmates were being housed in a private prison in Kentucky.

They were moved on two flights from there to Lake County.

Vermont corrections officials say the GEO Correctional Facility costs less.

It’s also more modern and secure for the prisoners than where they were in Kentucky.

About 1,600 inmates from Vermont and Washington state are expected to move to the GEO North Lakes Facility.
