Traverse City tennis pro happy to represent country
GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY – A national tennis champion resides in Grand Traverse County and he is excited about what he gets to do next summer.
Grand Traverse Resort and Spa professional tennis instructor Fernando Belmar won the Spanish National Championship at his hometown tennis club in early June. Belmar took first place in the 50-55 year-old division.
The honor allows Belmar to represent his country in the World Cup Team Tournament which will be held in Helsinki, Finland starting June 19 of 2016.
“Playing with the national team, I think is the ultimate dream, for almost any athlete,” Belmar said. “I have played with the national team before in the 14’s and 16’s but having a chance to do it again at this age…you know I always say I’m getting younger, I try to convince myself of that, that I keep getting younger, but having a chance to do that again with representing your country, it’s just an amazing feeling.”
Belmar has been an employee with the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa since 2013.
