Charlevoix Students Learn To Build Boats From Scratch

A group of Charlevoix students spent their first week of summer building a boat from scratch.

Sixth and seventh graders from the area’s intermediate school district competed in the “College 4 Kids” class.

It’s called “Build a Boat and Hope She Floats.”

Students learned how to assemble an eight-foot boat using a stitch and glue method.

Baker College sponsors the event.

The college’s dean of business and technology says the event offers great opportunities.

“There’s always a future when you’re getting kids involved in real-world project based learning. They can’t go wrong,” says Mark Lagerwey.

Students put their skills to the test by launching the vessels into Walloon Lake.

Both boats stayed afloat.

Each will be donated to the charities Challenge Mountain and Camp Quality.
