State Senate OKs Bill Allowing High Security Level Prisoners at Lake County Prison

State lawmakers have approved a bill that would allow prisoners with any security level to be housed at a Lake County prison.

The Michigan Senate approved the bill Wednesday 23-14.

The bill would allow higher security level prisoners from out of state to be housed at the former Michigan Youth Correctional Facility located near Baldwin.

The GEO North Lake Correctional Facility has already agreed to house more than 300 inmates from Vermont.

A total of 1,600 inmates from Vermont and Washington are expected to be moved to the Lake County prison.

The reopening would also bring hundreds of new jobs to the area.

The bill now goes to Governor Snyder’s desk.
