Omaha Community Mourns Loss of Officer Killed During Last Shift Before Maternity Leave

A Nebraska community is coming together a few days after a police officer was killed in the line of duty.

Officer Kerrie Orozco was killed in a shoot out on Wednesday while she tried to arrest a gang member.

It was supposed to be her last shift before going on maternity leave to take care of her daughter who was born prematurely in February.

Her daughter was going to be released from the hospital this week.

Orozco waited to take leave so she could spend more time at home with her daughter.

“She was a friend a popular officer a top notch person and i cant even imagine that this has even happened,” said police chief, Todd Schmaderer.

More than $80,000 in donations have poured in from around the U.S.

The seven year police veteran is set to be buried Tuesday.
