Police Investigate Suspicious Material Found at TC West High School

A suspicious substance put a Northern Michigan high school on alert this morning.

A student found black powder and other possible bomb-making materials in a back pack.

The powder was found in a locker room at traverse city west senior high school around 9:00 a.m.

Staff immediately called the sheriffs department.

The used a K-9 to help figure out it was not a threat.

Even so, administrators say the response was necessary.

“We train for this type of situation and we’re ready for one of those worse case scenario. Today it was not that case but we have taken every precaution to make sure that what was found was not potentially a threat to our students or our staff .”

Students were not evacuated and according to deputies, no charges will be filed.

It turns out the materials were for a student’s physics project.
