Sinkhole Closes Portion of Traverse City Street

A sink hole closed several blocks in Traverse City Monday.

S. Elmwood Avenue is closed from Seventh up to Eleventh street.

Signs and barricades block the road near the sink hole.

The road had to be shut down because the hole is about four feet wide and three feet deep.

The city says a pipe broke and caused the road to cave in.

“We found out that we have a broken storm pipe,” said Robert Becker, Streets Department supervisor. “We are in the process of calling all of our preparation in and then we will fix it tomorrow morning starting at 7 a.m.”

The city suggests you use Sixth Street to get to Munson Medical Center and other buildings in the area.
