Special Report: Battle of the Cancers

Lung cancer kills more people than any other cancer in the United States.

But the government is spending a lot less on trying to find a cure for lung cancer compared to its spending on other types of the disease.

In this special report we look at the questions being raised about government spending and cancer research.

Some experts say it’s time for the National Cancer Institute to reassess the way research money is distributed.

But the head of the N.C.I. has said that the institute and its doctors should have the final say about how money is doled out, not advocacy groups or politicians.

So far, N.C.I. doesn’t seem interested in reassessing its funding priorities.
