Jack’s Journal: Singing Lessons
It all started when I read this article stating every one can sing, only a slight few are actually tone deaf. Otherwise you can sing, we just don’t do it enough to get good.
With that I made a call to NMC’s music department to see if any one was up for a challenge. Ron Gentry was, he agreed that everyone can sing, the younger we learn the easier.
“Because this and this have to coordinate, so that you are on pitch and that’s easier when you are young,” said Ron Gentry, vocal coach.
Ron wanted me to sing something, I went for an old favorite of mine….and here is my singing debut, and there’s only a few hundred thousand watching.
“Take me out to the ball game, take me out to the crowd. Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack’s, I don’t care if I never get back, ’cause it’s root, root, root for the Tigers if they don’t win it’s a shame! ‘Cause it’s one, two, three strikes and you’re out at the old ball game!”
How’d I do coach?
“You did beautifully, really, yeah you maintained the integrity of the key very well,” said Ron.
Next step breathing…
“Take me out to the ball game, take me out to the crowd, I don’t care if i ever get back…”
So we worked on breathing and sustaining the tone.
Feeling more at ease, I just tried to not be self-conscious, as my first lesson came to a close.
“The good news is you can carry a tune.”
