Upper Peninsula Mine Will Shut Down for Five Months

An Upper Peninsula mine, closing for five months, will affect more than 300 workers.

Cliffs Natural Resources says they are temporarily shutting down the Empire Mine in June and will resume production in the fall.

A company spokesperson says the decision is a response to a high level of iron-ore imports into the U.S.

She says the company will monitor the market throughout the next several months to see if the mine can reopen earlier.

A crew will perform maintenance while the mine is closed.
