European Union Holds Meeting After Hundreds Drowned Crossing Mediterranean

European union leaders held an emergency meeting after hundreds of people drowned trying to cross the Mediterranean.

They also agreed to lay ground work for military action against traffickers.

The leaders promised more ships, planes and helicopters to save future lives.

Funds for the EU’s border operation around the Mediterranean were tripled.

It will reach close to 9 million euros — which is about $10 million a month.

The Mediterranean border patrol would be called on for emergency rescues.
